Every day, one in three Americans is affected by heart disease. This is the bad news. Now the good news; due in part to the many educational and research efforts of the American Heart Association, mortality rates for heart disease have declined by 30% in the last decade. Studies show, however, we still have a lot of work to do. Heart disease and stroke remain the leading cause of death in the US.

This is why chairing the 2013 Upstate Heart Ball is both an honor and great responsibility. The focus of this year's gala is to ignite and inspire everyone in our community to build healthier lives. I have challenged my colleagues and Upstate businesses to join us in moving forward the mission of the American Heart Association to eradicate cardiovascular disease. By supporting the AHA, you are helping to fund life-saving research, education and advocacy. By committing to a healthier life, you are a role model to others. For all of these efforts, I thank you.
